Veterans day, november 11
Veterans Day is observed annually on November 11 with the purpose to honor all veterans from all branches of the military for their service.
History of Veterans Day - On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month 1918, the Armistice (meaning to cease fighting), went into effect between the allies and Germany. A year later, Congress proclaimed Armistice Day, while describing the War, as 'the most destructive, sanguinary and far-reaching war in the history of human annals. That resolution expressed hope that the World War was the war to end all wars. In May 1938 a Congressional Act made the 11th of November a legal national holiday "a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day'.
In 1945 however, a WWII veteran, Raymond Weeks believed that all veterans, not just those who died in WWI, should be honored and celebrated. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the bill to law and to this end, on June 1st, 1954, Armistace Day was replaced with 'Veterans Day' and has since recognized all veterans who have served and continue to serve.
The Veterans Day program is organized and managed by the Oahu Veterans Council and Center with support from the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. We continue to ensure that all our Veterans, both those whom have passed and those living today are celebrated and appreciated on this, their day.
